University students to launch islandwide protests over student murder

The Inter-University Students’ Federation (IUSF) yesterday held demonstrations outside a number of universities including those at Kelaniya, Performing Arts, Peradeniya, Rajarata, Sabaragamuwa, and Ruhuna to protest at the killing of Susantha Aruna Bandara and the arrest of some other students.

IUSF spokesman Udul Premaratne said six students were arrested last morning after a number of protests held the night before.

He said Welikada police had arrested four students of the Colombo University Indigenous Medicine Faculty while the Kirillapone Police had arrested two students of the Sri Jayawardenapura University.
"We insist that they be released immediately. They have no right to do this to any of us. A complaint has been made to the IGP but nothing has been done. We will file a fundamental rights petition if our voices go unheard. We are protesting because there should be some justice for Susantha's killing," he said.

Susantha's mother too is on record as having claimed that the Police were responsible for his death.
